The Crimson Ritual

The first thing Elara noticed was the silence.

Not the natural kind that settles over forests at night, but something thicker. A silence that felt placed there. Deliberate. Watching.

The invitation had arrived three nights prior, sealed in deep red wax, pressed with a sigil she didn’t recognize but somehow understood. Inside, a single line: You have been chosen. Midnight. Wear velvet.

She should have burned it. Instead, she wore black velvet like she was told.

The estate stood far beyond the tree line, where the road thinned into something barely remembered. Its towers clawed at the sky, windows dark except for a faint, pulsing glow deep within its heart.

The door opened before she could knock. No one greeted her. Still, she stepped inside.

The halls were lined with velvet drapes so heavy they swallowed sound. Candles flickered along the walls, their flames bending as she passed, like they were bowing. Or recoiling. Then came the whispering. Soft. Layered. Endless.

Not words at first, just breath brushing against her ears from nowhere and everywhere at once.

She followed it. Down a spiral staircase. Below the earth. The chamber revealed itself slowly, like it didn’t want to be seen all at once. Stone walls soaked in shadow. Crimson banners draped from ceiling to floor. A circular altar carved from something too smooth to be rock. And them. The Coven.

Dozens of figures cloaked in velvet so dark it drank the candlelight. Their faces hidden behind porcelain masks—expressionless, pale, perfect. They were waiting. For her. “You came willingly.”

The voice didn’t belong to a single person. It moved through the room like a current, passing from one masked figure to the next. Elara swallowed. “I… didn’t understand the invitation.”

“You understood enough.”

A figure stepped forward. Taller than the rest. Its mask was different—cracked faintly along one eye.

“Velvet binds the chosen,” it said softly. “And crimson reveals them.” The Coven began to hum.

Low. Vibrating. Alive. The altar pulsed. Elara hadn’t noticed it before, but it was breathing.

A slow expansion… then contraction. Like something inside it was trying to wake up.

Or get out. “No,” she whispered, stepping back. But the velvet drapes behind her shifted. Closed.

Sealed. “You were not summoned by chance,” the cracked mask continued. “Your blood carries the echo.” “Elara… of the First Line.” Her heart stopped. No one knew that name. No one.

The humming grew louder. The masks turned toward her in perfect unison.

“You feel it, don’t you?” the voice whispered. And she did. Something beneath her skin. Moving. Stirring. Remembering. Her vision blurred. Suddenly she was standing somewhere else.

A memory that wasn’t hers. A woman in crimson velvet stood at the same altar centuries before. Her hands were bound, but her eyes were calm. Willing. Smiling.

“Begin,” the woman said. Elara gasped as the vision snapped away.

“No… I’m not, this isn’t” “You are the end of the circle,” the Coven replied. “And the beginning.”

The altar split open. A deep, endless darkness yawned beneath it, swallowing the candlelight entirely.

From within, something breathed. The scent hit her first.

Iron. Fresh. A blade was placed in her hand. It was warm. Waiting.

“Blood must return where it was first given,” the cracked mask said. “You have been called to complete the Crimson Ritual.” Elara’s hand trembled. “This is wrong,” she said. “This is murder.”

“No,” the Coven whispered. “This is remembrance.” The humming became deafening.

The darkness beneath the altar began to rise. Not as smoke. Not as shadow.

But as something watching back. “You were there,” the voice said gently.

“At the first ritual.” Another vision tore through her.

This time she was the woman in crimson velvet. Kneeling. Smiling.

Cutting her own palm and letting the blood spill into the altar’s void.

Not in fear. In devotion. Elara screamed. The blade slipped.

A drop of her blood struck the altar. Everything stopped. The chamber inhaled.

And something beneath the world opened its eyes.

The Coven fell to their knees. Not in reverence. In relief. “It knows you,” they whispered.

“It remembers.”

The darkness surged upward. It wrapped around Elara’s arm, cold and impossibly heavy, pulling—not outward, but inward. Into something deeper than flesh. Deeper than bone. Into memory.

“You were never meant to escape the ritual,” the cracked mask said. “You were meant to forget it.”

Elara tried to pull away. But her body no longer listened. Her blood burned.

Her mind fractured. And beneath it all… She felt it. The truth. She hadn’t been chosen.

She had returned. The blade rose again. But this time, she didn’t fight it.

The last thing she heard was the Coven’s whisper, trembling with something dangerously close to joy:

“Welcome back.” The scream that followed did not belong to Elara. It came from beneath the altar.

From something ancient. Something starving. Something that had waited lifetimes…

…for her to remember. And far above, in the silent forest where no wind dared move.

The trees leaned inward. Listening.

The Crimson Ritual had begun again.
